Comparison Essay: Public Vs Private Law Office

The objective of this research paper is to compare two systems used in a public law office versus a private law office. The public law office which I gathered the information from was the San Francisco District attorney’s office (white collar crime unit). The people I interviewed for the information was Blanca Conway, a paralegal manager, and Tracy Sacca, a paralegal who handles asset forfeiture— both can be reached at (415) 551-9583. The private law office which I gathered the information was Baker & Mckenzie LLP. However, the “white collar crime unit” is located in an entirely different building across the street at, 732 Brannan Street, San Francisco, CA 94103. According to the DA’s website, sfdistrictattorney.org— San Francisco appointed its first district attorney in 1856, and the Hall of Justice wasn’t erected until 1960. The current District Attorney, George Gascon, was sworn in, in 2011 (sfdistrictattorney.org/history). There are 120 assistant DA’s and 14 paralegals that makeup the entire public firm and the various departments almost operate autonomously. In the white collar crime unit, which I will be focusing on, there are currently 20 assistant DA’s and 3 paralegals respectively. This unit deals with legal issues such as fraud, embezzlement, consumer protection, environmental harm,
