History is usually suggested as a continuum of similar events that occur repetitively. Machiavelli’s quote, “Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past, for human events ever resemble those of the preceding times”, is exemplified by events in history and issues that still exist. There are multiple historic occurrences that can attest to Machiavelli’s thinking, specifically three will be discussed, each within a different spectrum. In order to attest to Machiavelli’s thinking, a comparison between the Great Depression and the recession of 2008, a correlation between Adolf Hitler and Donald Trump will be made, and the similarity of the Jewish refugee and Syrian refugee crises. Roosevelt. Though, the recession was not as severe as the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s efficient programs influenced the Obama administration to create many solutions for a recession in a smaller scale. Such solutions include, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which included tax cuts and an increase in government spending (The White House). Which were clearly influenced by the Great Depression when FDR implemented several welfare and social programs in order to help out the poor. The programs executed by the Obama administration are focused on more of a countrywide resolution rather than an individual help, like FDR made, but the programs have similarities in their terms and in the intentions imbedded into them. Not only were the solutions for these economic downturns were similar; the causes for both were caused by outright economic irresponsibility. Comparable to the Great Depression, the recession was caused by the over distribution of mortgages to individuals who were unqualified, while the Great Depression was caused by everyone investing into the stock market blindly, the two causes did not exactly …show more content…
In the 2016 presidential election has been dominated by the sole figure of Donald Trump. Trump has stood out amongst the others for his outrageous and vulgar remarks towards particular ethnic groups. Trump has made numerous insulting statements towards many members of society including: immigrants, Syrian refugees, Latin Americans and people of Islamic faith. Trump’s recent claims as prospective include wanting to create a database for those of Islamic faith. s resonated many with the similar ideas Adolf Hitler, who implemented I.D. badges to identify Jews during the Nazi regime. Even though, assuming Trump will bring about another Holocaust against Muslims in this country is extreme, it is hypothetically so similar, that the future of this country with Trump as a prospective president would resemble the times when Hitler was the dictator in the 1930’s. With the idea of creating a database for solely those of Islamic faith it is difficult not to begin to believe that Trump’s ideas are similar to those of Hitler. Hitler was extremely convincing and led a lot of Germans to believe the same negative sentiments towards Jews. The similarities in their views are alarming, and should not be ignored.
