Comparison Between Bert And Bertram Cates Inherit The Wind

Decent Essays
The book I read was Inherit the Wind, composed by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.
While reading this play, I started seeing some comparisons between me and Bertram Crates.
This essay is to compare and contrast between Bert and I. Bertram Cates is a young teacher who is on trial. He is on trial because he deliberately read a book on evolution to his class despite knowing it was illegal. Cates’ is a relatively discreet individual but he speaks his mind. He is a person who, if feels strongly will say what he wants. I am a student. I consider myself to be outgoing and entertaining, although I can be serious as well. I like to stand up for myself and I will speak my mind if I don’t have faith in in something.

Although he is linked by name to Robert E. Lee, an honored Southerner, Harper Lee’s characterization of Robert E. Lee "Bob" Ewell presents him as a loathsome and repulsive person. She achieves this through descriptions of his physical appearance, his cowardly actions, and through the cross-examination of his eldest daughter in To Kill a Mockingbird. A suggested alcoholic who spends all of his welfare money on whiskey, it is ironic that Bob Ewell, a hateful man from a disgraced family, shares a name with the revered Civil War commander. During the trial, the first time the reader is formally introduced to Bob Ewell, Lee describes him as a, “bantam cock of a man” who struts up to the witness stand and crows as he swears in (227).…

It is no wonder why professional movie reviewers resort to statements such as, "Mr. Kramer has wonderfully accomplished not only a graphic fleshing of his theme, but he also has got one of the most brilliant and engrossing displays of acting ever witnessed on the screen," to refer to the skilled acting in the movie (Crowther). The brilliant acting is proven throughout the movie. One of the most poignant scenes is at the culmination of oral arguments in the trial. Brady, the driven and defiant prosecutor, will be unconventionally called to the stand as a witness for the defense. He faces interrogation on his beliefs and those found in the bible, and has no choice but to admit that Bertram Cates has every right to think for himself and to teach evolution in his classroom.…

The way others see you is incredibly important because it determines how successful you will be in your life. If others see you as unapproachable, negative or even depressed, your chance of acquiring a job or making friends is lower than someone’s chance, who is positive, joyful, or satisfied. Other’s perception of you is also critical when it comes to first impressions. Although first impressions are often incorrect, they are often what people remember you by. So when the time comes for an incredibly important job interview, and you radiate the wrong, first impression, your chance of the employer telling you that they would like to hire you is slim.…
