Comparison Activity Lesson 5

For many years I’ve been in search of one of the most amazing films ever made, it’s called “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. When I was about nine years old I remember my mom giving me my allowance, and saying “now you can go buy your movie tickets to see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; since you earned it”. Remembering just how wonderful this movie was, I want to have one for my own collection. So, I decided it's about time to make a purchase of my own and add it to my collection of DVD’s set aside for my Grandchildren to enjoy. That’s when I decided to search the web

“The library catalog is offered to student through the school web site to things view things like books, movies, products, and other things you may want to purchase” (Opposing viewpoints.com). Through the other web search engine Amazon, it offers a wide array of different items for sale. “Like for example, jewelry, movies, books, and poster; to name a few” (amazon.com). After a careful search of both web engines, I was able to locate the same exact item on both the opposing viewpoints (library catalog), and amazon web sites. While both of these web sites gave some much needed detail, each of them gave a much different tone when describing the overall contents of the film. For example, on the opposing viewpoints the author provides a warm, touching, and a heartwarming review of what the film consisted of along with what the film entailed. As for the usefulness of this film, amazon’s reviews gave it an almost five stars, and gave a great review to its overall contents. It also mentioned how it was a wonderful children’s film and they would watch it over and over again. On the Opposing viewpoint site, they basically said it was “originally released as a motion picture” (Dahl, 2011, N.p). Like with everything these days’ people are in the market to purchase things in an instant, without thought, and finding ways to save a dime, and that’s why they use to use the internet hoping to land a bargain. But really, it would be nice to have a bit more information when looking for a purchase, because you want to know what the quality is, and is it worth the cost before jumping in and finalizing that sale. Just a final note, if you decide to purchase this item for yourself, or family, I would definitely suggest using the school library site since it gives you up to the date information than all the others. By taking my advice, I believe you’ll be happy with your choice, and purchase just like me. By using either of the two sites mentioned earlier, I’m sure you’ll enjoy every minute of such a wonderful selection you made; like I have.

In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Firstly, the author states that Disney has become a conglomerate having many subsidiaries and that it has had troubling effects on what Disney considers child-friendly.…

Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a rendition of author Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory using much of the same plot and themes. Stuart’s film is about the seven deadly sins the block humanity from being received into heaven. Each child commits a singular sin that disqualifies them from being the future owners of the chocolate factory, which is symbolic of a child’s heaven. In the end, Charlie represents Everyman, by being granted the factory. Even though he has committed a small sin, he ultimately was forgiven by God (or in this case Willy Wonka) and given paradise which is the answer to Charlie’s poverty.…

Thief of Bagdad was considered a film for children in 1924. When I saw this film my first impression was that how could a film where a man steals and does bad things could be for children. However I think it is a great film because even though we do not get to hear what they are saying we perfectly understand the story. At first I was only judging the film because honestly I do not like black and white movies and I do not like silent movies either. I sometimes judge a book by it cover and this time this film prove me wrong.…

The reason Willy goes from moment to moment, from joyful to angered, so quickly happens because the life he leads is both the best and the worst thing that ever happened to him. This duality of a salesman is shown in the theatrical yet real sets, in the adherence to the 1984 play's staging, dialogue, and set. Even the cast comes from the '84 play. The house which is so prominent and integral to the story and Willy's view of his life stands in a fake world too close to the edges as it falls apart becoming frailer each day. What is real and what is creation becomes blurred not only in Willy's head, but also in each location of this film.…

It gives rise to questions of identity, culture, and community.
