Comparing Zefirelli’s and Luhrmann’s Adaptations to Romeo and Juliet
Many film adaptations have been made to William Shakespeare’s plays. Two notable adaptations are from Franco Zefirelli and Baz Luhrmann, who both turned The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to a film. Franco Zefirelli’s version was made in 1968 and Baz Luhrmann’s version was made in 1996. The setting, character portrayal, and lighting in Zefirelli’s version gives a more realistic depiction of the relationship between Romeo and Juliet as Shakespeare intended compared to Luhrmann’s more contemporary version.

Two feuding families; two young lovers; one story of forbidden love. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story which encompasses an essence that defines the story no matter the context. Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet embraces the physical violence, rivalry, death of lovers and reconciliation, thus constructing a movie with the same emotional response intended by the original play. Zeffirelli’s interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet greatly reflects the major changes during the era. The 1960’s was a time of civil unrest, youth rebellion of moral and civil rights and a period in history where authority was questioned.…

“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?” These are words spoken by Juliet in both versions of the movie Romeo and Juliet produced by Franco Zeffirilli in 1968 and Baz Luhrmann in 1996. Both the masquerade ball and the balcony scenes portray the characters of Romeo and Juliet very differently as well as the overall production of the adapted versions of the plays. The masquerade ball takes place in the Capulet household, and that is about as far as the similarities go between the films.…

Jennifer L. Martin’s article “Tights vs. Tattoos” accurately points out significant differences between Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet and Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet by justifying its claims with evidence from both movies. Martin’s article “Tights vs. Tattoos” correctly identifies contrast in the tomb scene between both movies because it states that Zeffirelli’s portrayal reveals Romeo dying before Juliet awakes, whereas Luhrmann’s adaptation has Juliet gaze at Romeo for a second before the poison takes effect on him. The first good piece of evidence is that Jennifer L. Martin asserted in her article “Tights vs. Tattoos” stating, “Perhaps the major difference between the two films is that in Luhrmann’s version Juliet awakens to see Romeo take…

In the Zeffirelli’s version Romeo is using the bushes to hide from Juliet and the nurse. When Romeo has the guts to speak out to Juliet in this version it startles her that he is there. When they start talking Romeo uses the tree right by the balcony to climb up to get to the ledge that is on the side of the balcony to hug and kiss Juliet. The reason Romeo got up to this level to find Juliet talking to herself about loving him he just wanted to get away from his friends that were calling his name because he ran off. In the new more modern version of Baz Luhrmann he doesn’t even have Romeo and Juliet talking to each other on the balcony ,but talking in a pool.…

Zeffirelli's version took place in a large courtyard of an enormous home, and looks to be representative of the time in which the story took place. Luhrmann’s version takes place in a modern courtyard with a swimming pool and an elevator. Zeffirelli's version also takes place at night and is darkly lit by the moon, stars, and windows of the home. In the latter version, Romeo steps into the courtyard and it immediately hums to life with modern electric lighting, contrary to the time in which the original story took place. Not only does the setting of Zeffirelli’s version better portray the story, but the dialogue does as well.…

During Romeo and Juliet's first meeting the theme of sudden and forceful love is heavily alluded to. The theme describes a situation in which love is extremely sudden, such as love at first sight, and powerful enough to make previous situations or plans seem insignificant. Though Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet and the scene displayed in Act 1 Scene 5 are notably different, due to them being represented in different mediums, they both touch on this theme using specific diction and details. In Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet the theme is conveyed through the song, “ What is a Youth” , which was playing in the background of their first meeting as well as the meeting itself.…

In the two filmic portrayals of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the directors Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli use music and camera angles and movement to accurately depict the ignorance of the character’s newfound love. Both Luhrmann and Zefferelli used music to convey a feeling of urgent ignorance in the balcony scene. Luhrmann accurately depicts the feeling of ignorance in this scene throughout it. He uses fast and lively music whenever Romeo and Juliet are together. The music tempo increases greatly whenever they are talking about getting married.…

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is known to be one of the most relevant tragic love stories, even as it is read over 400 years after it was first published. Because of this relevancy, in 1996 the play was adapted into a film directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film transformed Shakespeare’s original into a more modern context, attempting to keep that relevancy in an era with a different society and contrasting morals. Through this translation of text to film, Luhrmann has changed certain aspects to adjust the audience’s perspectives on the story and on certain characters and has therefore lost some of the original meaning of the text. A significant change created was how the audience was positioned to view Romeo.…

In Shakespear’s and Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, there are many similarities, but there are also many different substantial differences that can change the impression the viewer may get if they only watch the movie without reading the play. To begin, there are many similarities between Zeffirelli 's and Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet. One similarity is that Romeo is very moody; in the beginning of the movie, Romeo can be seen frequently slumped over and talking in a very downcast manner. Similarly, in the play, Romeo is found by Benvolio laying moping around saying, “Should without eyes see pathways to his will!” (I.i.162).…
