The Danger of Tradition Imagine doing something over and over again, but there does not appear to be a true purpose behind it. A person does something just because his ancestors did it before him, but the reason why has been lost. In “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost, they reveal the idea of following a certain tradition, but the characters do not really need the tradition anymore. In “The Lottery,” Jackson writes about a town coming together right before the harvest, and they have a lottery.…

In the many short stories that we read there were many different possible similarities that could be made between the stories. Although all of the stories are unique in their own way some of them share similar themes and experiences in their stories. Such as how the narrator in “An Ounce of Cure” has a terrible experience with alcohol just like how Kyle has a terrible experience that changes his life in “Cons”. There are other similarities such as between “An Ounce of Cure” and “Greasy Lake”, whereas the main characters in each story have a bad experience that ultimately helps them mature. Even if the stories might seem different from one another they still are very similar within the lines.…

The story of Cinderella is well known all around the world but not all of these 700 stories are the same. Each of these stories are culturally diverse and have different themes and ideas. Still many of these tales also share similar magical elements, characters, and endings. All these similarities create suspicions because most of the stories were written when communication was almost impossible from country to country. One main subject shared between these tales is the stupidity that the men have.…

Differences in between the lines Each story a person shall come across will always differ from one to the next. Whether it is from a different point of view of how the grammar, tone, content, theme, texture etc. is used the stories are never going to be exactly the same; they will not necessarily be different either. Many stories have very similar motives to make you think, act and feel certain ways, like the comparison between N. Scott Momaday’s “The Way to Rainy Mountain” and Alice Walker’s “Beauty When the Other Dancer is the Self.” They compare and contrast perfectly.…

Both “The Lottery”, and “One Friday Morning” are great and developed stories. “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson shows suspense, and a great use of imagery. But overall, “One Friday Morning” by Langston Hughes is the best choice and should be chosen for the 1940’s unit because of the character development, and the breathtaking symbolism. The first reason why “One Friday Morning” should be a part of the 1940’s unit is because of the character development in Nancy Lee.…

Many fairy tales have similar and different storylines and themes. Analyzing Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella and Joseph Jacobs’ Catskin with the Propp’s Thirty-One Functions, the Cinderella and Catskin tales are versions of the same tale for they have similar story attributes and themes even though they do not share every function on the Propp’s list. In both tales, a female hero who has a father works as a kitchen maid and is constantly harassed and ridiculed by a maternal figure. In Cinderella, Cinderella is harassed by her stepmother who makes her pick “bowls of lentils out of the ashes only” only to tell her that she cannot go to the festival with them.…
