Comparing Velazquez And Picasso's Paintings

I think Velazquez was trying to portray a beautiful young girl and her hardworking maids. In the picture Velazquez was trying to portray royalty at it’s finest. A king who would only settle for the best for his daughter. She is waited on hand and foot by her hardworking maids and caretakers. This painting also shows how Velazquez wanted to emphasize how fragile this young girl was. This painting seemed to scream vulnerability. This girl looks no older than eight years old and looks like she needs her maids for protection. Velazquez was trying to portray the love of a father for his very young and vulnerable princess. Both of these pictures are similar because they feature the princess. Also, these pictures consist of at least one maid. The pictures are both made with dark backgrounds and both pictures were made before the 2000’s. Velazquez’s version and Picasso’s version are both oil on canvas paintings. These paintings both have the name Las Meninas.These paintings are different because Velazquez and Picasso both had a very different way of interpreting a scene in time. Velazquez did his version of Las Meninas using realism. Picasso did his painting using a version of painting called cubism. In Velazquez’s picture the scene is less focused on the princess and more on the maids of honor and the surroundings. In Picasso’s picture seventy percent of the canvas is filled with the princess. There is only one maid of honor and you can’t even distinguish her face because Picasso wants the whole focus of the picture to be on the royal princess. The picture that Velazquez created focuses more on the vulnerability of the princess and how the maids of honor matter for her well
