To start off, the readings are similar because of the strong core values that they do possess. The first thing I noticed in Still I Rise, is that she reminded me of myself. She seems like a strong woman that does not let anything come in her way. Since she shows a strong personality about herself you could say she is extremely empowering from that. For example, in the poem she says in her first couple lines “You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, /You may trod me in the very dirt /But still, like dust, I’ll rise.” She did not build up to that moment she stated it the poem off with that. Respect is highly important within the readings because it truly shows who they are. In Still I Rise, she shows respect, but she shows respect to herself. She will rise no matter what any harsh words comes her way. She knows that another person’s opinion really does not matter. The only opinion that matter is her own. The Good Man shows respect in a different way. He does believe in himself, but more important everyone around him respects him. He lived a great life of always trying to help others around him. Many of his friends and family can see that. For example, in the book son always spoke fondly of him. Everyone always said what a “Good Man” he was. So the readings are different within the sense of respect because in Still I Rise she respected herself, but in The Good Man he was clearly respected by
