Comparing Two Parenting Styles

America provides many opportunities to succeed, but there are various barriers and hindrances that impede success. Lareau discusses two things that are likely to impact the opportunities that America provides. Parenting styles and the social structures of the both parents and their children impact how children act in their social systems.
Lareau (2011) states that middle-class parents use concerned cultivation in raising their children while working class parents and poor parents use accomplishment of natural growth to raise their children (pp. 2-3). Parents who employ concerned cultivation believe good parenting involves enlisting their children in organized activities and establishing an environment where the child can communicate with adults in a relatively equal manner, promoting their children’s social, cognitive, and mental skills (Lareau, 2011, p.2). Another difference between the two parenting styles is that the parents, who believe in the accomplishment of natural growth, promote interactions with other family members and their children are aware of the boundaries between adults and themselves. The differences in parenting styles impact how children interact in their social systems. The differences between children whose parents use concerned cultivation opposed to accomplishment of natural growth are observable in the way the children interact in their social systems. For example, Garret Tallinger, a ten-year-old boy who is shy, serious, quiet and assertive with both peers and adults, daily schedule is comprised of highly structured activities such as baseball, basketball, piano lessons, and etcetera, resulting in his competitive, assertive, and mature demeanor (Lareau, 2011, p. 43-48).
