The Jim twins, for example, may have a lot of weird coincidence, but that is very rare when it comes to identical twins. The second example is Anais and Sam. Anais and Sam were separated at birth and shared a lot of similarities but like I said it's very rare for that to happen. The fact is that my personality has changed a little while I have gotten older, but that is because of my surroundings and environment. It can't be argued that some mental disorders are linked to DNA, but good parenting can help kids overcome them. Studies show that ADHD is something that you are born with but, you can take medicine for that. Plus Schizophrenia is also

However, at the end of the day genetics are the most important factor; some children are more genetically vulnerable than others to mental illness, and some children end up more resilient. Resilient children understand that they are not responsible for the flaws of their parents, and are able to continue living life regardless of the challenges. Doctors can actually diagnose children early on to see whether or not they may suffer from depression. A study done showed that behaviours at age 8 predicted the potential risk for depressive symptoms in late adolescence and early adulthood (Lee et al., 2013). Another interesting fact is that children with physical…

A lot of people think just because you’re an identical twin, that you must be the same in every aspect of your life as the other person. In my case, and in others, being an identical twin doesn’t prove that we are the same in all areas of life. I have an identical twin sister, named Emily. Emily is pessimistic, high maintenance and very well organized. I, on the other hand, am more optimistic, open-minded and easygoing.…

I have been fascinated with zodiac signs and horoscopes and the science behind it all for years. Being a Twin myself, though not identical, I’ve always wondered and questioned the zodiac chart system and how it could pertain to both me and my twin brother. I mean, certainly my horoscope couldn’t be exactly the same as his.…

In the video Nature vs. Nurture in Men and Women, I found interesting that both men and women believe that nurture was more important than nature. I think women are more committed to nurture then nature because they believe that they are in more control and could change certain factors when raising children, and they believe that if it can change then it is nurture. Although, there is a constant interaction between nature and nurture I believe that they both make us who we are today. In the Minnesota Twins video, I found it interesting that the two Jim twins before rediscovering each other had a unusual set of coincidences in their life that included wives with the same name, similar names for their son, have given their dog the same name,…

Novels, plays, and movies often depict characters caught in a conflict with their doubles. Such collisions call a character’s sense of identity into question. The film The Double by Richard Ayoade takes Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s original book The Double and plays it with a modern twist. Upon closer inspection of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s The Double and its movie adaptation by Richard Ayoade, we see that though both share many elements and plot progressions, the movie, as a more modern medium, utilizes its unique conception to provide a different outlook on Dostoyevsky’s philosophies.…

The story eventually brought upon the famous mental condition of a ‘split personality’ which psychologists now refer to dissociative identity disorder. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as multiple personality disorder, has been an ongoing controversial diagnosis of mental disorders among psychologists and psychiatrists. Though the question of whether the disorder is factual or faked considerable evidence shows that there are a number of individuals that suffer from symptoms.…

The title of the video, “Ghost in your Genes”, is very appropriately titled because it discussed the various appearances of phenotypic differences among organisms with identical genomes. In the mid to late 1900s, scientists were convinced that DNA sequences were solely responsible for every trait evident in organisms. After the human genome experiment, which involved compiling and analyzing genomes of thousands of different people, it was determined that humans have around 25,000 genes, far fewer than plants. This is a peculiar number because humans are much more complex than plants, so it would be expected that they would have more complex genetic material.…

Genes are passed on from parent to child and with that so do the traits those genes carry. This could most definitely be the passing of a mental illness or impairment. Although, this finding came way after the case of Buck V. Bell, and therefore the unfortunate event of sterilization occurred. If this research was available during this case better testing could have been performed, and maybe another outcome would have come about for Ms. Buck. I think that since technology has change so much over the years and there is now better testing performed to deem someone mentally unstable that yes, the use of genetic testing should be used in certain court cases.…
