Comparing Treasure Of Lemon Brown By Walter Dean Myers And The Pearl By John Steinbeck

In the short story “Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers and the novel “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck the main characters changed what they valued in life by resolving an internal conflict. While each character faced a different struggle they both valued family in the end.

Kino experiences a change in what is valued in life. Kino’s values change once he found the pearl. When he found the pearl he was more focused on the money that came from the pearls worth instead on focusing on stuff for his family and things they needed not what they wanted. Before Kino found the pearl he showed more love and care for his family and wanted to get anything that they never had and to help Coyotito. Then, once KIno had found the pearl he showed more aggression and less care and just focused more on how much the pearl was worth than his family.

Greg’s values changed once he met Lemon Brown. Before he met Lemon Brown he was in a tough spot. He didn’t understand why his dad was always on him on grades and strangely Greg never seemed to care about his father’s lectures. He decided to run off due to his father’s lecture on how he wants Greg to be successful and he got tired of it,but ended up wandering into an old abandoned apartment that was later on owned by Lemon Brown. When Greg meets Lemon Brown, Lemon Brown teaches a very valuable lesson on what life’s all about and how he should appreciate all that his family has done for him. Lemon Brown tells Greg that at a time he forgot the value of life, but one day it just disappeared and that’s when he learned to really appreciate what he had and valued.
