Comparing and contrast of “Those Winter Sundays” and “My Papa’s Waltz” In describing “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden and “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke we see that both are reflecting on a childhood experience with their fathers. There is a showing of compassion and understanding in both poems yet fear is also described. The speakers are reflecting back on a past childhood memory with their fathers but we do not understand if they are pleasant or resentment. Although they deal with different situations both are powerful poems forms of displaying a father-son relationships but also differ in demonstrating their feelings towards their fathers. In comparison to the two poems the speakers in the poems are speaking in memory on their childhood at a moment that they had with their fathers. The poems are showing the speakers attitude towards their father and are differences in fatherly love. Both poems are describing young boys for instance in “My Papa’s Waltz” “Could make a small boy dizzy” (Roethke 2) and in “Those Winter Sundays” “and polished my good shoes well” (Hayden 12) is showing that the speakers are boys and reflecting on a relationship between a father and son. Both seem to struggle with their feelings towards their father as a young boy and now as they are older. There are also differences in the Poems such as in “My Papa’s Waltz” the speaker describes a fun time dancing and romping with his father as their mother looked on with a discerning frown…
