Comparing Thorin And Bilbo In The Hobbit

Bilbo, the non-traditional hero, and Thorin, the classic hero, are two characters from ‘The Hobbit’ written by J.R.R Tolkien. The skills the protagonist acquired that helped him overcome adversity and obstacles can be compared to the skills the classic hero displayed. Although Bilbo and Thorin are both heroes, Bilbo emphasizes that he was a better hero than Thorin. Their past plus their experiences from the quest forged them into characters with different characteristics. Therefore, Bilbo and Thorin’s most distinctive feature is their personality. In the beginning, Bilbo showed that he is intelligent meanwhile Thorin displayed his arrogance, but they both exhibited bravery. Later on, Bilbo conveyed nobility and persistence where Thorin manifested …show more content…
From his frightening insight with Gollum, the mysterious creature, Bilbo obtains a ring of invisibility that saves the group multiple times from the giant spiders and frees them from the Elvenking’s fortress. Thorin and Co. “knew only too well that they would soon all have been dead, if it had not been for the hobbit; and they thanked him many times.” (218). Thorin was determined, in a very stubborn way, to reclaim his treasure as well as his long-forgotten land. All aside, both heroes demonstrated that they are leaders who the dwarves couldn’t have continued without. Therefore, Bilbo’s optimism was far more important to the story than Thorin’s. However, their heroic qualities led them and the dwarves to recover their stolen valuables from The Lonely …show more content…
Contrastingly, the classic hero was selfless and persistent. On the one hand, Bilbo trades the Arkenstone to stop the dwarves, elves, and men from fighting which works out well. Bilbo presents the “Arkenstone of Thrain,” and confesses that “It will aid The Elvenking in their bargaining with Thorin.” (314). Although he lost Thorin’s loyalty, everybody acknowledged him for doing the honest thing. On the other hand, Thorin gave his life battling in the war and so “they buried him deep beneath the Mountain, and Bard laid the Arkenstone upon his breast.” (336). His selflessness and persistence inspired himself as well as Bilbo to see the world from a different perspective. The two heroes displayed forgiveness because they forgave one another after Bilbo infuriated Thorin for giving away the Arkenstone. Conversely, Son of Thror aggravated the hobbit when he wasn’t willing to bargain with Bard and the Elvenking. Overall, Bilbo’s integrity was a form of heroism that allowed to stop a war before it began while Thorin embraced the Battle of Five Armies and died as a consequence of being
