In Gatsby, the person narrating the story is Nick, he tells the story of Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom Buchanan. Nick explains in his diary that Daisy and Gatsby had some love for each other in the past; however, he went to the war, and Daisy married Tom Buchanan. After five years not seeing Daisy, Gatsby is excited, but nervous at the same time. “ Luckily the clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers and set it back” ( Fitzgerald 91). Gatsby is so nervous that he knocks down Nick’s clock. Although Gatsby knew that Daisy had some love for him, she was not going to leave her marriage for him. In the end of the novel, Gatsby dies and so does Myrtle, Tom Buchanan’s mistress. Daisy and Tom both leave Long Island, and start their marriage on a new clean slate. The plot of The Sensible Thing has a different plot. George O’ Kelly’s love is Jonquil Cary, who lives in Tennessee. George is utterly in love with Jonquil; however, she doesn’t feel the same towards him because he cannot provide for her. She explains to him that marriage is not the sensible thing. She says, “If you’d been ready for me two months ago I’d married you- - now I can’t because it doesn’t seem to be the sensible thing” (Fitzgerald III). Although George hadn’t seen Jonquil for “four long seasons,” he still has love for her; moreover, she doesn’t want to marry him.
