In the novel, “Of Mice and Men,” the theme Race,Gender, and Ability(RGA) is shown throughout the book, with Curley’s wife, Crooks the stable hand, and Lennie. It seems as if many could argue that their are more than one theme is the book, which is true. But RGA is the theme most commonly seen in the book from beginning to end. Crooks demonstrates this saying,”They play cards in there but I cant play because i’m black.”(pg.68). This is an example of Racism, because they aren't letting the African American play in a game of cards because of his skin color. This suggest that RGA is the theme of the novel. A great example of Gender is when Curley’s wife says,”I get lonely.” she said. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody nut Curley.

Curley's wife knows her beauty is her power, and she uses it to flirt with the ranch hands and make her husband jealous, while other characters call her “jailbait” and “tart”. She is utterly alone on the ranch, and her husband has seen to it that no one will talk to her without fearing a beating. This shows because of her gender and that the position she is in all the men but Curley are scared for their job and safety. Lastley Gender, in the novel George says,”I’ve beat the hell outa him, and he coulda bust every bone in my body jus’ with his han’s, but he never lifted never lifted a finger against me.”(pg.40). This is a great example of Gender because, Lennie was never smart and relied on George to tell him what to do. Even thought Lennie was three times bigger and stronger than George, Lennie did not have the Ability to process his mindset correctly, which allowed George to control Lennie and tell what to do. “Why he’d do any damn thing I tol’ him. If I tol’ him to walk over a cliff, over he’d go,”(pg.40), said George.
