Why do people have to use such strong words, or why do they use specific tones in some of their letters or stories? Well, as you can see, authors like Dr. Martin Luther King and Nikki Giovanni want to inspire and get the attention of readers. The reason these authors wrote their poems or letters was because of the problem that was going on, which was segregation. They wanted to let the people know how bad this problem was and wanted to change their perspective, so they could imagine how bad it was for African Americans to live in a place where they don't have the same rights as white people. So, authors Dr. Martin Luther King and Nikki Giovanni use figurative language, tone, and rhetorical appeals to provoke, calm, and inspire their audience using their words.

The reason rhetorical appeals are used in her poem is because of the qualities of an argument that make it truly persuasive, there are 3 types of rhetorical appeals which are logos, ethos, and pathos. These 3 things can be used to make a convincing argument. Pathos is a way people convince a crowd to take action or accept an opinion to appeal to their feelings. Through the use of pathos, Giovanni persuades the readers using specific emotions in the poem. Using references to historical figures like Emmett Till, Rosa Parks, and Mamie Till-Mobley, Giovanni talks about the struggles they faced as African Americans and the injustices they went through. And she talks about how hard it was for Emmett Till’s mother, who had to bear the tragic loss of her son’s life and was taken by people who they had nothing to do
