The first Poem La Belle Made sans Merci is a ballad written by John Keats. The poem is written from the perspective of a man who meets a knight, waiting for his lover on the side of a hill. The poem criticizes how miserable and intolerable the world has become for the knight. Within the first stanza Keats uses setting and imagery to depict a dark and deathly scene,
“The sedge has withered from the lake”

“Piano” is written to depict the idea of despair through the use of nostalgia. Like the Narrator in “Piano” the mother from “A Mother in a Refugee Camp” has constant reminisces of the time spent with her son. An example of despair in “A Mother in a Refugee Camp” can be seen in the penultimate line the poem,
“A little daily act of no consequence Before his breakfast and school”
Achebe uses this line to suggest how life was like before they entered the refugee camp; by using words such as “before his breakfast” and "no consequence”, this shows irony as of the fact that now, there are consequences, now instead of “breakfast” the “mother” and “son” just starve. Acehbe expresses despair in this line through the use of past tense and nostalgia, this is comparable to how Lawrence portrays despair in “Piano”.
Lawrence uses harsh words as well as strong imagery to convey his ideas of being unable to fight his memories. This is seen the first line of the second stanza,
“In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song betrays me
