The song “Poprocks & Coke” by Green Day represents the theme Family Sticks Together. The theme is represented throughout the book The Warlock The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott, through the journey the children take. Over the course of the story we can see the twins are trying their very best to stick together, but by the end of the 4th book the two twins have differing opinions of people and end up choosing sides. Sophie ends up going with Niten to find the Flamels, while Josh ends up going with John Dee and Virgina Dare to Alcatraz to find Machiavelli and Billy The Kid. Though up until this point the two twins are almost always together, to the point when Sophie got her powers awakened by Hecate in her shadowrealm,

In 1976, the Swedish group ABBA ravished the world with their hit song “Dancing Queen.” Even after 30 years since its exposition at King Carl Gustaf’s ball, the song remains a favorite in dance clubs. Mixed with pop-operatic harmonies and inspiration to the dance rhythm in George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby," as well as the drumming on Dr. John's 1972 album “Dr. John's Gumbo”, ABBA is able to convey an elated feeling of limitless joy and highlights the greatest music of the disco era. Through a beautifully woven blend of uplifting, empowering lyrics and a sophisticated melody scattered with heart-tugging high notes, “Dancing Queen” celebrates the carefree innocence of youth.…

The song “Same Drugs” by Chance the Rapper is literally about drugs and losing friendships. In the song, he reflects on his friend recovering from drugs, while he is still using. This is shown by the line “We don’t do the same drugs no more.” Further, Chance feels as though his friend is not the same person anymore because she has matured after becoming clean. This is exemplified by the line “When did you change, Wendy, you’ve aged, I thought you’d never grow up.”…

Over the course of thousands of years, human behavior remained consistent. There are striking parallels between the past and the present that are beautifully preserved in the words of poems, songs, and other writings. Even though the terminology and language may be different, the message remains true. An example of such a pairing is the 2nd century poem from Basavanna, “Before the grey reaches the cheek” and the 20th century song by Billy Joel, “Piano Man.” At first, the poem and the song seem like they don’t correspond with each other, but at a closer glimpse, the similarities are astonishing.…

Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I.’s 2013 music video for their hit single “Blurred Lines” depicts three females in little clothing performing seemingly innocent acts that have sexual connotations while dancing around and engaging with the three well dressed men who seem to only be watching the women, which sets the tone that the women are only there to serve as eye candy for the men. The first thing the 503.3 million viewers of the “Blurred Lines” music video on Vevo saw was Thicke lying in bed with a topless model while his arm assumes a dominant position over her body almost completely blocking her from the view of the camera. While this position may be perceived as simply cuddling, in the realms of this music video that reflects…

Iron Maiden first released “Run to the Hills” as a single in 1982, and Bruce Springsteen released “Born in the U.S.A” on the album of the same name in 1984. Both songs comment on aspects of America. Although they are seemingly unrelated, both Iron Maiden and Bruce Springsteen use their musical talents in each song to give an outlet for these issues to be heard. “Run to the Hills” by Iron Maiden is a song about the troubles between Native Americans and Europeans when the Europeans first arrived to the Americas all the way to the post-Civil-War United States. Lyrically, it describes all the atrocities done to the “redskins” such as the two seen in the line: “Raping the women and wasting the men.”…

Many artists these days tend to sample other authors work into their songs to add a greater purpose or meaning to their music. Although this technique is not used in a lot of genres and appears mostly in hip-hop music, forms of music sampling have been around since the late 1900’s. Artists like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar are known for sampling other artist’s music or speeches and incorporating them into their songs to enhance the message or theme that is trying to be presented. Kendrick Lamar uses a sample in his song “Alright” to help illuminate what life is like as an African American and the struggles that they face due to their skin color.…
