There was situational and verbal irony taking place. The author shows this by stating, “The lust of battle died in him. He became bitten by remorse.” This quote is explaining that the sniper was feeling curious and remorseful because, the sniper was thinking that he might of knew the guy that he shot and that if he did, he most likely would’ve bad and upset about it. “Yes, quaint and curious war is! You shoot a fellow down, You’d treat if met where any bar is, Or help to half-a-crown.” This quote is explaining how the author used verbal irony by saying war is quaint and curious. When war is really traumatizing and very dangerous and scary. They are also different by the author stating, “He decided that he was a good shot, whoever he was. He wondered did he know him.” This quote is explaining that this part of the short story is situational irony because the sniper was wondering if he knew the person that was supposed to be his enemy. “Had he and I but met, By some old ancient inn, We should have sat us down to wet, Right many a nipperkin!” This quote is explaining how this part of the poem is irony because the main character is explaining how him and the enemy could have been good friends instead of fighting against each other in war. This quote is explaining that war is painful and suffering. The author also explains the differences by stating, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.” This quote is showing how war can also tear family apart or turn brother on brother. It also explains how war can be painful if someone you know is your enemy. “I shot him dead because-, Because he was my foe, Just so: my foe of course he was, That’s clear enough; although.” This quote is explaining that just because the soldier was the main character’s foe, that they still could have been friends, but it was too late because he shot him dead, so as one could see this is how war can tear friendships apart.
