In the short story, “The Setting Sun and the Rolling World”, the author used the airplane to symbolize modernity, and portray the new modern life will be better than the old traditions. He also used the symbol to support his theme, that every people have their rights and the freedom to choose their future and path, rather than trapped in their family’s old traditional way. Musoni’s dislike of the modern technology is shown through his thoughts and actions at the first paragraph, which he recognizes the airplane as a “white speck” and “shook his head.” However, the old Musoni’s son sees the airplane differently.
