At the end of both the stories, the sniper and the boy kill their brothers by accident. The boy in The Scarlet Ibis wants his brother to become normal by the time school starts. Pushing him every day, from the day he was born the older brother knew that if you put his brother on his stomach he “push himself up, turning first red, then a soft purple, and finally collapse back onto the bed”. This is important because he did not mean to leave his brother behind in the rain, a deafening boom of thunder made him run faster and forget his brother is just learning to run.
