Lennie simply could not learn from his mistakes because of his mental handicap and he plainly did not comprehend his own strength despite his soft nature otherwise. George and Lennie were not new to running from situations that turned bad due to Lennie’s inability to comprehend life situations as an adult. Lennie had killed a puppy and mice from petting them too hard and consequently his last victim would be a woman. Lennie and George would run and hide from people who didn’t understand Lennie’s handicap and continuously start over in hopes of another outcome only to find the same time and time again. In Lennie’s last mishap he would encounter Curley’s wife, despite George’s request for Lennie to stay away from her because she caused trouble, Lennie would find himself alone with her. Curley’s wife would begin to be flirtatious with Lennie, asking him to feel her soft hair. Lennie not aware of Curley’s wife’s motives he would begin petting her hair as he did with the puppies and mice. Curley’s wife would ask Lennie to stop however Lennie would be unable to fully comprehend this request therefore resulting in Lennie once again not understanding his own strength and breaking her neck. This mistake would be too big in nature for Lennie and George to run and start over again. George knew that the best outcome for everyone was for George to take Lennie for a walk in a state of peace and comfort and take Lennie’s life before the men came with all their vengeance and

Despite holding the knowledge of how strong Lennie can be, even if he does not mean to be, Curley’s wife “took Lennie’s hand and put it on her head” (Steinbeck 92) to feel how soft her hair was.
