Her parents were not like most parents. Jeannette’s parents thought school was a waste of time, did not always try to provide for their children, and provided their children with stability. This family has deep issues. The book starts with the Walls family living in a trailer. In the middle of the night the dad wakes the family and insist they pack one thing with them because they are leaving. This is the start of the constant out of no where moving. Due to the constant moving from state to state, Jeannette and her siblings did not always go to school. Jeannette said, “Mom and Dad did most of our teaching” (Walls 20). Jeannette’s father was an alcoholic and her mom focused on her paintings. This left the children fending for themselves most of the time. Both parents lacked a stable income. This caused food to be sacred to the children. At one point, Jeannette said, “There was nothing inside, but a half gone stick of margarine” (Walls 68). As the children grew up they started to get annoyed by their parent’s lack of stability. Eventually Lori the oldest daughter follows her dreams and moves to New York. Parenting is one of them. Chris physically and mentally did everything he could for his child. In one scene he bought Christopher Jr. food but not himself. Chris was always put his son before his own wants or needs. It made the situation harder because Chris was a single parent. In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris was able to swim through the hardships. This resulted in a happy ending. Chris never gave up on his dreams and was able to become a millionaire because of his dedication. On the other hand, The Walls parenting was unlike most. The often put their needs before their children’s needs. Jeannette’s dad would waste most of their money on alcohol and Jeannette’s mom often refused to work. At times the children even had to drag their mom out of bed for work. The ending of the book also differs. The Walls family sank in the world of poverty. The parents chose to remain homeless. Even after their dad died his wife still chose to live in poverty. Although the children turned out to be successful it is a completely different story for their
