Historically, storytelling is one of the oldest forms of recorded, sequential human thought told for the purpose of entertainment to ever exist on Earth. At its core, the art of storytelling contains many elements that make up a story. Such elements include characters: imagined individuals within a story, setting: where the story sets place, and plot: the story being told chronologically. In this essay, I shall be writing about two other ingredients of literature found within the stories “Godfather Death” by The Brothers Grimm and “A&P” by John Updike, the ingredients of literature recognized as protagonist and antagonist. Primarily, I will be identifying and analyzing the protagonists and antagonists of both stories according to Kennedy’s and Gioia’s definition of the terms. As a result of Lengel’s words, Queenie demeanor of an apparent self- independent woman, over soaked in the constant sexual attention she draws as a result of the way she dresses and acts, comes crumbling down when she responds initially to Lengel’s comments. She first states that “we are decent” (Updike 20) , still trying to maintain that self- exuberant belief that her delusion of the world is superior to the real world mentality Lengel is addressing her with. Then, she states that she is only here to buy the herring snacks for her mother. (Updike 20) By casting her mother as the foundations for her actions, who isn’t physically there whatsoever, I believe that she unconsciously exposed herself as a mere girl who is not truly independent, responsible enough to own up to her own actions, and accept full responsibility for what she is being scrutinized
