There must be a legitimate reason why a murderer kills his/hers victim, either for fun, money, or revenge. Furthermore, killing with no reason at all could be considered as madness. The madness Edgar Allan Poe uses to generate excellent dark short stories with such intense feelings must come out of somewhere. It is a contradiction for a murderer to create a motive rather than finding reasons, blame, and intentions to end someone’s life. Several Edgar Allan Poe short stories such as, “The Tell Tale Heart”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Pit and the Pendulum” do pertain a person killing another individual in unclear narrative.

Regret can come in several different manners, from a voice inside your head constantly going on to acting like a completely different person. In “The Tell Tale Heart” the narrators mind rings of constant agonizing noise after successfully deceiving the authorities of murder. The narrator thought this in his mind “I talked more freely to get rid of the feeling: but [noise] continued and gained definitiveness…” (Poe 78-79), and yet a top of the line murderer would not have any sense of regret or guilt. Studies show, “Persons afflicted by guilt-based perfectionism have unrealistic expectations concerning the quality of their moral living…” (Psychology of Neuroticism and Shame 184), and that is reasonable, because the narrator did have a questionable living moral. The end of the story did end up being an imperfect murder, for the narrator confessed of his killing “’Villains! I shrieked, ‘dissemble no more! I admit the deed!...’” (Poe 101).
