Comparing 'The Pearl And Treasure Of Lemon Brown'

Have you ever acted in a certain way and then later changed your attitude or outlook on events or situations that have taken place? In the novel, The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck and the fictional story “Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, this is exactly what happens. The Pearl is about a man named Kino who finds a large pearl to help his son who was stung by a scorpion. However, men try to steal the pearl and attack Kino, leading him to show no mercy and kill them, which causes him to run away and ultimately the death of his son. “The Treasure of Lemon” is the story of Greg Ridley, who needs to study for math but is disrespectful, and goes to an abandon building where he meets Lemon Brown, but they are stopped and Greg learns …show more content…
One quote that shows his satisfaction with his wife is, “There not need for speech if it is only a habit anyway. Kino sighed with satisfaction and that was conversation”(Steinbeck 4). KIno enjoyed the mornings when his wife was making breakfast or caring for their baby and listening to the song of the family without having to speak. Furthermore, Kino and his wife are content with their life that they have and enjoy the things they are able to have. In the novel, when Kino finds the pearl of the world he gets excited and even goes as far as wanting something that wouldn’t even support his family but bring danger, “His lips moved hesitantly over this- ‘A Rifle,’ he said. ‘Perhaps a rifle”(Steinbeck 25). In this quote you can see that when Kino find the Pearl of the world, he seems eager to get a rifle because of the pearls glistening shine that overwhelms him. The pearl is hypnotising him into thinking that everything in the world that is wrong with him and convincing him that nothing is ever going to go wrong and everything will be okay. “Greg had sat in the small, pale-green kitchen listening, knowing the lecture would end with his father saying he couldn’t play ball with the scorpions”(Myers4). Greg is already knowing that he is going to be punished and is not going to do what he wants. His father's lecture is already leading him in his mind that things in his life are going to change fast he doesn’t appreciate that his father is just caring for him and not meaning for him to get angry. “Greg pushed the button over the bell marked “Ridley,” thought of the lecture he knew his father would give him, and smiled”(Myers15). When Greg is already done with hanging out with Lemon Brown and the thugs have gone away Greg went home still expecting the lecture but happy about it. Greg learned to cherish his family because his father and his father and his lecture will not always be there. When Greg met Lemon Brown he figured out what is important in life and that he should cherish every moment of
