Comparing The Passionate Shepherd To His Love

Decent Essays
I think that an obvious point of both comparison and contrast between these two works is "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is an invitation "The Nymph's Rely to the Shepherd" is an answer to the proposal. By their very nature, then, they are both connected and nothing alike. While they both clearly reference some of the same images, both poems have different functions: one poses a question and one answers it. Another point of contrast for these poems is the speaker's tone. One is a young shepherd who wants the woman he loves to marry him and the other is that young woman who gives the shepherd her answer. The tone of the "passionate shepherd" is hopeful and romantic; he offers this woman everything he has which is of value and promises

In the novel Enduring Love, the antagonist Jed Parry (to be referred to as Parry) suffers from de Clérambault’s syndrome, and he finds solace from his socially unorthodox loneliness through his unconditional love for the protagonist Joe Rose (henceforward known as Joe). However, even though he believes his love for Joe to be mutual, Joe ends up looking for his own form of comfort from which he can escape Parry. Joe is a thinker, who looks for consolation in his articles about Science and rational thinking. Perhaps Joe finds Science so comforting because of its precise examples and intellectual worth; it lacks all the complications of stories and even to an extent life. It is important to note that even the day after the tragic balloon accident…

In both poems the weather contributes to the overall effect on the reader. In 'Exposure' Owen uses weather to achieve effect at the beginning of the poem with the quotes: 'the merciless iced east winds' , 'mad gusts tugging' and 'clouds sag stormy'. These quotes set a theme for the rest of the poem, of pain, suffering and anticipation.…

Love in poems While the poems “Those Winter Sundays”, by Robert Hayden and “Still I Rise,” by Maya Angelou are exposing the same theme as love, it is actually very different as the aspect or point of view in those specific poems; a very different kind of love pushing the image from parent-son love to the opposite as hate or unloved feeling, but still love related. Even the two poems has similar elements in common like sounds, style, or figurative language, they also have many elements in opposition as well: persona, tones, and literary devices. After reading both of them I could find common elements as free-style or similar words repetition in each of them. The author Robert Hayden presents father or parent-son love in total opposition with…

This poem, "Calypso", by Suzanne Vega, is a poem about the Nymph, Calypso, setting Odysseus free. I think the tone of the poem is lonely, but proud: I feel a sense of yearning, but she is still standing strong and letting Odysseus go. There are many metaphors and similes in this poem. One example of a metaphor in this poem is, "My garden overflows, thick and wild and hidden. " By using this metaphor, I get a lot of images flowing through my mind.…

'They Flee From Me" by Sir Thomas Wyatt is a rhyme royal type poem which portrays vivid and evocative imagery by employing certain monosyllabic words which provide the bitter tone present throughout the poem. Wyatt recounts his youth and his meetings with certain women who now do not "seek" him any longer. The poet appears greatly disturbed by one specific woman whose betrayal affected him to the extent of addressing this poem to her. Wyatt's portrayal of women is quite significant in this piece as we not only see an unconventional side of a woman, we are also shown the power of women to evoke certain feelings within a man and make him feel either dominant or helpless according to their own will. Throughout the poet maintains a great sense…
