What makes a hero? A hero is someone who sacrifices themselves and is selfless for the greater good. The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton and "What Makes A Hero" by Alex Lickerman both give a strong perspective on heroism. The Outsiders is a coming of age story that is about a gang of greasers that go through many hard times such as fights and a murder. "What Makes A Hero" is about what makes someone a hero and how you don’t need superpowers, fame, or lots of money to be one. The Outsiders includes many acts of heroism. Dally, one of the main greasers, acts as a hero when he saves Johnny from the church fire despite the chance of getting severely hurt, he told Ponyboy and Johnny what to do after the murder, and he gave Ponyboy and Johnny …show more content…
He saves Johnny from a church fire despite the fact that he could be seriously hurt. This shows Dally being selfless and risking his life to save Johnny’s. For example S.E. Hinton wrote, “He burned one arm pretty badly, though, trying to drag the other kid out the window.” You can see by this that Dally helped Johnny get out of the fire by sacrificing himself for his friend. “What Makes a Hero”, defines heroism as “the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others.” Dally does this through staying calm and getting his friend out alive. Dally gives them supplies so Pony and Johnny can make their way to somewhere safe after the murder. The Outsiders states, “"Here"--- he handed us a gun and a roll of bills--- "the gun's loaded. For Pete's sake, Johnny, don't point the thing at me. Here's fifty bucks. That's all I could get out of Merril tonight He's blowin' his loot from that last race."” This shows how Dally gives them money to keep them fed as well as something to protect themselves with.
