Comparing The Nymphs

Improved Essays
The poems are similar in the way that they both focus on love throughout the text. The differences are the way they perceive love and the things they link to them. Each of the two have differents things they want to convey to the reader but they go along the same route as far as how they choose to write. These poems have very similar ways but also very different ways.

The poems compare with love and contrast as well. Each of the two discusses love using their own views on it.The shepherd has a materialistic view on love. He shows this by offering her all theses different items to express love. The Nymphs has an outlook on love that values more long term love. Also love that comes straight from the heart and it genuine.

In this essay I will compare and contrast the two poems by presenting different examples. Titles can say a lot about a poem. Although titles can sometimes be misleading, they often establish the setting or portray the tone of the poem. The titles given to these poems are very similar because they establish the setting, but also serve different purposes. “Last…

A few things in common from those poems is that everyones lilves have now changed and they have to rebuild their lives. Another thing in common is that everything from that day on is no longer the same anymore. Some things both poems do not have in common is that they were at sea in the poem "Saigon is Gone" and for the poem "1976: Year of The Dragon", they were in America at that time. Another difference is that in the poem "Saigon is Gone", Ha's mother is sea sick due to everyone moving around on the ship from left to right.…

Harlem Dancer poem and The island women of paris poem were no different they talk about the same thing but there talked about it in different ways. This type of event may even be a form of pun. “ Harlem Dancer poem” by Claude Mckay and “the island Women of Paris” by Rita Dove both describes a woman or women from the caribbean currently living in a new environment. One way that these two poems are different is the cause of the characters death. In ‘The Highwayman’, Bess’s death is caused by one of the character’s actions. Her death could have been caused by Tim the ostler, who told the British about the highwayman, or it could have been the highwayman’s fault, who came to visit Bess in the first place and gave Tim the chance to tell the British. Another possibility is that it is Bess’s fault that she died, because she shot herself. Most likely though, is that all of the events worked together to sadly kill the character.…

While growing up, children learn various lessons from their elders that will eventually pay off at some point in their life. For instance, a teacher may request that a student wait their turn to speak, and therefore helps that child learn the virtue of patience. In both of the poems provided, a child or children are taught something, but, within the poems themselves, not both things being taught are beneficial. In "A Barred Owl" by Richard Wilbur, a little girl is shown by her parents that she does not need to be afraid of sudden noises she hears in the night.…

I think that an obvious point of both comparison and contrast between these two works is "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is an invitation "The Nymph's Rely to the Shepherd" is an answer to the proposal. By their very nature, then, they are both connected and nothing alike. While they both clearly reference some of the same images, both poems have different functions: one poses a question and one answers it. Another point of contrast for these poems is the speaker's tone. One is a young shepherd who wants the woman he loves to marry him and the other is that young woman who gives the shepherd her answer.…

The speaker of the “Nymph’s Reply” attitude towards love is that love is only temporary because nothing in the world is everlasting and eventually everything will parish and wither away. In “The Passionate Shepherd to his Love,” a shepherd tells the speaker in “The Nymph’s Reply” that he loves her, and offers her many marvelous offerings, such as “a gown made of the finest wool.” He promises her a fine life. The speaker in “The Nymph’s Reply” rejects the shepherd and believes that his offerings are all temporary and not everlasting. For example, in the line, “Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten,” she expresses that everything he is promising her will eventually wither away, such as spring, as it will turn into winter.…

I like to think that they are similar in their descriptions of human emotion and tendencies. When I think about these two poems, I think about the fact that there are people out there who are in large amounts of monetary debt. They are living pay check to pay check, paying the minimum amount due for everything, living truly above their means and not saving for the future. They do this simply to “keep up with the Joneses” they are your friends and neighbors and they act like “life is good.” But sadly on the inside they are like Dunbar states “we smile, but, O great Christ, our cries, to thee from tortured souls arise.”…

The nymph has no care for all of those objects, but would rather simply own the shepherd’s love. This is very reflective of Ralegh’s typical love poems that centered on his desire to rise above the normal and create his own twist/interpretation on how a love poem should be. The response does still incorporate many of the same images as before, but now they are seen as imperfect and wilted or weakened. Overall, what Ralegh seems to be communicating through this poem is the importance of not relying simply on material objects, but rather the importance of one’s true…
