Comparing The Mother And This Is Just To Say

The two poems I decided to pick for my comparison research paper this week are, “The Mother” and “This Is Just To Say.” I chose to pick “The Mother” because it was one that caught my attention from the first moment I started reading it. I also chose it because it is a common topic in the society today. I decided to pick “This Is Just To Say,” even though it was one of the shortest poems I ever read. I chose this poem because it is similar to the poem The Mother. They are similar because in the poems they are taking something from someone. In The Mother, the parent is having an abortion, and taking life away from an unborn child and/or children. On the other hand in This Is Just To Say someone is taking food from another person that did not belong to them. Those are the two poems I chose to pick this week. …show more content…
The poem, “The Mother” conveys one of the most talked about topics in today's society. It is not only one of the most talked about topics, but it is something that is found to be very difficult. The message or theme it conveys is abortion. This poem can be very relatable to many people who have made that decision once in their life or for someone who has at least thought about making a decision such as an abortion. Although the topic is very sensitive it does not at any point violate the decisions other people might choose to make.
In the poem, “The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks, and “This Is Just To Say” by William Carlos William, they both make sure that they present a vivid picture that appeals to the readers. They make sure we are able to understand what they are saying. For example in This Is Just To Say the author gives use a chance to someone eating a plum and apologizing for it. It also can give you the image of someone writing it as an apology letter because they took something that does not belong to

When comparing and looking at the two poems “Graded Paper” by Mark Halliday and “Learning to Read” by Frances E. W. Harper, you can see that the two are different in many ways. They are two poems from two very distinct time periods. The diverse elements and styles that are used in these poems make them unique in their own way. But, while they have different forms, subjects, word choices, and themes, their overall tones, while not exactly the same throughout the poems, can be seen as similar in a way as they both result in a happy and positive feeling.…

Slavery in Brazil began around 1532 and lasted until the 1800s. After Brazil abolished slavery, African slaves soon gathered in settlements in Rio de Janeiro. Favelas or shantytowns are inside and around large cities in Brazil, and homes are constructed with brick and cement. Due to poverty in the larger populated areas in the favelas, it was easy for a mother to grieve over her dead baby. People usually mourn when someone they love passes away, in Brazil, people no longer grieved over death.…

“How to tell your mother there will be no grandkids in her future” The Poem “How to tell your mother there will be no grandkids in her future” by Ira Sukrungruang is a very relatable and uses affective imagery to deliver very serious message. This poem is the best on the website “180poems.com” because it establishes that people cannot always make their parents happy. People often wish they had 3 lives just so they can be happy and make others happy and many people can relate to that. The speaker explains “Tell her you wish/you had three lives:/one for work, one for your dreams, / and one for her” (17-20) these lines are very relatable because many people wish they had extra lives so they don’t have to disappoint their loved ones with the extra…

“Stealing” by Carol Ann Duffy and “The Planned Child” by Sharon Olds both explore themes of issues in our modern world using similar poetic devices, as well as contrasting devices. “Stealing” describes a thief explaining how he stole a snowman, and what has led him to commit crimes. “The Planned Child” is about a child who hated the fact that she was planned, but realises that her mother loves her anyway. The tone and mood of the two poems are unlike and each conveys the poem’s themes uniquely. Diction and imagery are very similar, as well as its use to develop the character or storyline.…

Female infanticide is the deliberate and organized killing of girls at or soon after birth by the men in the society. This issue is more common in countries like India and China, where society values male children over female children because a female is considered a burden and a disgrace, or in the case of India a very expensive investment to the father. As a human being and a woman in this world, I view female infanticide to be outrageous and unrighteous and believe there should be a better concentration on this issue by the world. In Gustav Klimt’s piece titled Hope II 1907-08 (Oil, gold and platinum on canvas) at the Museum of Modern Art, the painting reveals the implications of childbirth for a woman and uses elements of death such as skeletons, praying, and mourning to portray a mother’s reaction to her unborn child. Gustav Klimt Hope II is effective in supporting my position against female infanticide because it captures the hurt and disappointment it causes not just for a mother, but for women everywhere to have a daughter killed because of her sex.…

The poem, “Pain For A Daughter” written by Anne Sexton, does not solely focus on the daughter’s pain. This is about the family’s suffering.
