Those who may appear gloomy, shy, or alone might just need someone to be there for them. As stated in the story “The Ministers Black Veil,” a lady once said the words, “Truly do I. And I would not be alone with him for the world. I wonder he is not afraid to be alone with himself.” She and her husband had been talking about Mr. Hooper as if they are concerned, but did not reach out to really help him with his worries. She stated how she wondered if he is afraid to be with himself as if Mr. Hooper do not accept himself. Mr. Hooper understands himself completely, that is why he is wearing the black veil. If Mr. Hooper wasn’t alone all the time, he would probably not wear the veil. In the story, Mr. Hooper said to a woman he loves, “Be mine, and hereafter there shall be no veil over my face, no darkness between our souls! It is but a mortal veil—it is not for eternity! O! You know not how lonely I am, and how frightened, to be alone behind my black veil. Do not leave me in this miserable obscurity forever!” Mr. Hooper feels alone. He needs someone to be there, but al people do is judge him because of the appearance of a black veil. People changed their character towards him because they feel uncomfortable by his appearance. Everybody judges, but no one likes to help. This is another great example of how things are in today.
