Comparing The Man With A Twisted Lip

Conan Doyle in “The Man with a Twisted Lip” shows Holmes and Watson in a different light. Watson at the beginning is by himself looking for a friend when he finds Holmes hiding out in an opium den he was investigating. Holmes then tells Watson of his investigation into the disappearance of Neville St. Clair. That night Holmes and Watson go to the home of the missing man and speak to his wife who has just received a letter from the perceived dead man. They spend the night at the house where Holmes stays up all night thinking about the mystery. The next day Holmes and Watson go to and see the only suspect in the crime, a dirty old beggar. Holmes then takes a bath sponge and washes off the beggar’s dirty face to reveal the face of Neville St.

A Comparison Between Sherlock Holmes and Shawn Spencer Although Sherlock Holmes and Shawn Spencer are similar in their strategies in solving a mystery, the way that they interact with their sidekicks, their skills at perceiving a crime scene and methods identifies who the more advantageous detective is or how they are equally effective. Shawn Spencer is just as effective as Sherlock Holmes by how he observes every inch of the crime scene. Holmes interacts with his sidekick by sending him off to do most of the work while he secretly does the exact same work, as seen on Page seventy-three of The Hound of the Baskervilles, in which Holmes says, “I can only wish you better in Devonshire,” while Shawn does most of the work and his partner Gus…

This quote intrigued me because the two had just met and Holmes was quite rude to her. This foreshadows how they treat each other later on in the story. Their relationship is going to be full of mockery of each other but yet full of love and support for one another. This reminds me of something I would say to my sister or something my dad would say to me. Their relationship could either resemble one of father and daughter or one of sister and brother.…

In the case present to Sherlock Holmes in "The Crooked Man" seems to be a outrageous and deceiving, when Nancy Barclay kills her husband in a locked room which forms a heavy argument. The police, seem disinterested in the missing key or the animal tracks inside the room, facts which Holmes see as an important clue. The story develops from a supposedly impossible crime into a cycle of why events have happened as they did. Part of the story deals, eventually, with some other books that Conan Doyle wrote or narrated. The fact that there is no crime in "The Crooked Man" doesn't pull away from the story, for the case shows how Holmes sees the clues differently than the police force sees them.…

The book A Scandal in Bohemia by Arthur Conan Doyle and the book The Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe both present cases where the lead detectives must procure a lost or stolen item. Although both authors use almost congruent plots, characters and situations to expose readers to great tales of ratiocination, the contrast in the characters’ behavior, the fluctuation in plots and the slight difference in situations lead to Doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia to be a more thought provoking and cultural questioning tale. In both Poe’s and Doyle’s works the lead detectives share similar personalities. Both detectives, Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin and Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, are unconventional, withdrawn from society, have a love of solving problems beyond…
