Imagine if you were forced away from your home at an early age, having to take refuge in a distant country while many of your family members and friends are suffering from disease and hunger. The Second Sudanese Civil War turned this pretend scenario into a real life problem that many young children of Sudan and surrounding countries were forced to face. These young children were known as The Lost Boys of Sudan. Although there are many stories about this war, “The Lost Boys of the Sudan” demonstrates events and details that occurred during this treacherous time differently than A Long Walk to Water to properly align with Salva’s point of view. All in all, Park altered history in A Long Walk to Water, even though many of the events actually occurred. Although A Long Walk to Water alters some events that happened in real life, many things that Park wrote about are based off of history. For example, both “The ‘Lost Girls’ of Sudan” and A Long Walk to Water have young girls doing chores and tasks for their families. “The ‘Lost Girls’ of Sudan” states, “She lists her chores: cooking, cleaning, washing, fetching water from the distant stand-pipe, looking after her guardian's children.” (Matheson, 69) On the other hand A Long Walk to Water states, “To the pond and back— to the pond and back—nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya's daily routine for seven months of the year. Daily. Every single day.” (Park, 20) This shows how within both stories the girls have challenging chores that can take all day. These chores can be long, harrowing tasks such as walking many miles every day despite the heat of the hot summer days, an illness, or even an
