Promoting language and literacy development It is important that teachers and early childhood professionals in the school setting progress monitor over an extended period of time. It needs to be at least two eight week cycles. When working with the youngest children in the home setting, David uses the Kaufman approach when working on language development. It was developed for children with apraxia of speech, but David also uses for many of the children he works with. The Kaufman approach is teaching the simplified version of the world to help the child be successful at imitation of words/sounds within the ability. An example of this is tuck in place of truck or gape in the place grape. An important strategy is the ability to get the child to imitate the sounds given or having the parents repeating the word back to the child just as it sounded.
