Comparing The Interlopers And The Story Of An Hour

Improved Essays
The two stories I have chosen are named, “The Interlopers” and “The Story of an Hour”. They are two very different stories with completely different characters, settings, plots, and writers. But of course they do still have similarities. For example, they are both in the catagory of short stories. So here are four topic, each with at least two examples from the stories to support the topic. The first topic is the setting of the two stories. The settings are hard to contrast considering “The Story of an Hour” has limited information about the setting. The information that we can get is that it tells that Mrs. Mallard is in her home. Kate Chopin (the author) is not specific about the color of her home, or what city, town, or country. She does say that Mrs. Mallard say she goes up a staircase, so we know the house is at least two floors. Besides that, she leaves Josephine to go to her room to cry, but that's all there is on the setting. In “The Interlopers”, the story takes place in the Carpathian Mountains. It also says that it takes place in a forest in the mountains. Unlike Mrs. Mallard, safe in her own warm home, Georg and Ulrich are outside. In the Mountains it is a "wind- scouraged winter night”. …show more content…
In both stories, at leats one death occurs. In The Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard is mourning after her husbands death. On top of that, she finds that her husband is actually alive, and she herself dies when she sees him because she has heart issues. In the story The Interlopers, the men start out wanting to kill each other. They are full of hate and anger. In contrast, Mrs. Mallard loves her husband and is sad that her husband is gone. Another difference is in the way the deaths occured. Mrs. Mallard died of natural causes. But in The Interlopers, Georg and Ulrich were killed. The main contrast is that in one story, their are survivors, in the other there are

“Stories for nighttime and some for the day” is a collection of fantasy short stories written by Ben Loory. This book contains 40 short stories and of them all, my personal favorites are “The Book”, “UFO: A Love Story”, and “The Snake in the Throat”. “The Book” is a story about a woman who goes insane about a book she had bought that she claimed had no writing in it. After not being able to return the book, she went on an absolute rampage as she sees other people reading it, and it becoming a best seller. This bothered her so much that she ranted on the television, radio show, and even wrote her own book about it.…

Short stories are “an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot.” (Merriam – Webster) These can have many differences and similarities. These factors could be the setting, the plot, the characters, point of view, tone, symbolism, theme, language, narrated time, content and more. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.”…

The two stories i’m going over are both written by Susan Glaspell and the stories are very alike, but one is more descriptive and has a perspective. The stories are both involved around a murder that happened to one of the characters, but have two different point of views. The first story is called Trifles and throughout the story you have to infer of what could happen and how are the characters’ feeling in situations. The second story is called A Jury of Her Peers and throughout this story is a specific perspective from one of the main characters. While both stories can be compared but also have differences as well, it may have a different point of view.…

“The Interlopers” and “Two Friends” are two contradictory stories that possess similar elements. The main difference is the relationship of the figures within the two short stories. The Interlopers written by Saki ventures on the everlasting feud between two families, the Gradwitz and Znaeym. The prolonged hatred between the two families was passed for three generations due to land dispute and long lasting sequence of poaching affrays. In order to finalize their discord, they sought to kill each other one night.…

Differences in between the lines Each story a person shall come across will always differ from one to the next. Whether it is from a different point of view of how the grammar, tone, content, theme, texture etc. is used the stories are never going to be exactly the same; they will not necessarily be different either. Many stories have very similar motives to make you think, act and feel certain ways, like the comparison between N. Scott Momaday’s “The Way to Rainy Mountain” and Alice Walker’s “Beauty When the Other Dancer is the Self.” They compare and contrast perfectly.…

It is no secret that some stories are very similar to each other in plot and theme. “What we talk about when we talk about love”, written by Raymond Carver, and “What we talk about when we talk about Anne Frank”, written by Nathan Englander, is no exception. While these two stories are similar, they both have differences. In order to find these similarities and differences, we need to look at the plots of the stories and the characters involved with their respective stories. This is going to be done by first laying out the plots for each story and the characters in it, then talk about how the two stories are similar and lastly, talk about how the stories differ from each other.…

The play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin both focus on their women protagonists and the desire for freedom both women have from a male dominating society. Essentially, both authors depict the longing for freedom between these women through the use of characterization, symbolism, and situational irony. In “Trifles” Mrs. Wright had murdered her husband in order to gain her freedom from the restraints that were put on her due to her marriage. Prior to being Mrs. Minnie Wright she was Ms. Minnie Foster.…

Two stories, the interlopers and the poison tree so similar yet so different, why don’t we compare the similarities between both stories so that we can figure out which one to “use”. Well, first of all both the interlopers and the poison tree are made special with situational irony, this is shown in the last few lines of both stories. What really set off the similarities radar, was that in both the interlopers and the poison tree the reader and the characters, were caught off guard by the sudden spectacular unexpected change in the plot. The other significant similarity that got the fire bells ringing is that both stories involve changes in character relationships. For example during the interlopers, both Ulrich and Georg have a change of heart…

The telegram played a role in “The Story of an Hour” when Mrs. Mallard’s sister’s husband received a telegraph about the death of Mrs. Mallard’s husband. In the story it says “He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram” (Chopin 128). During this time one telegram wasn’t enough to find out if information was true or not so a second telegram would prove if the information was accurate (Foote 88). In the story, the second telegram proved that the accident really happened and that Mr. Mallard was on the list of killed passengers. The first message that was sent People from different towns could now communicate by a telegram was sent from Detroit, Michigan to Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1847.…
