The first lines says, “ Now bury with the dead years of conflict.” From the beginning, he is already putting it out there to let go of all the past problems, they are already gone. “Seen through the vista of vanished years.” ( Austin 3). The word choice of ‘vanished years’ could most likely be being referred to as the years the grudges were held and how those times were wasted by anger. “Words more than feeling keep us apart,” this choice of words helps the reader to understand that things said are known for sure but feelings are never truly known. “Let all now be forgiven, and forgive.” ( Austin 15). This is the very last line which puts what the whole poem was trying to say into perspective for the reader. The theme to forgive is undeniable. Alfred Austin spent his entirety of “Forgiveness” using many comparisons and unlike things to show the goodness of forgiveness.
Alfred Austin’s poem, “ Forgiveness”, shows the importance of letting go of a grudge. “Forgiveness” uses personification, imagery, and diction to prove this true. Austin did not beat around the bush and gave us his feelings of happiness after letting go of his hate and past pain. “Forgiveness” relates to the short story The Interlopers because they both share a similar message, just with different ways of explaining it to the
