“A hero is someone who had given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” - Joseph Campbell (bigthink.com). In other words it means you do something that changes someone else's life positively. Within these heroes there is sometimes a Heroic Journey. The Heroic Journey is the basic path a hero takes to become a hero. Recently I read The Hobbit and watched the film Moana. These two stories have a hero who goes on a Heroic Journey. The Hobbit when compared to Moana has a better/stronger Heroic Journey. This can be seen by analyzing the departure, initiation, and return of the Heroic Journey. Moana and The Hobbit both have very strong departures, but they do have some differences. There are a total of 6 steps found in the departure: …show more content…
The first step found in The Hobbit is the road of trials. Bilbo goes through many difficult tasks like fighting spiders in mirkwood. Bilbo used his his sword and stones to fight them. “The next stone went whizzing through a big web, snapping its cords, and taking off the spider sitting in the middle of it” (Tolkien 158). The second step in The Hobbit is the ultimate boon. The ultimate boon in The Hobbit is the Arkenstone. The Arkenstone is Bilbo's solution to preventing the war. He also gives it away for their own good. The third step of the initiation in The Hobbit is the atonement with the father. In the end, Bilbo goes to speak with Thorin right before he dies. At this moment, Thorin says some words on how well he was throughout the journey. They also loved and hated each other at times. The fourth step found in The Hobbit is the apotheosis. Bilbo hangs around in places like Rivendell and Beorn’s house as periods of rest before returning home. Bilbo was happy to go home and he was invited back anytime. The Hobbit has much detail in its initiation, but has a few parts missing. Even though Moana has more parts to the initiation, The Hobbit has way more detail. In chapter 8, the text states that Bilbo was able to free himself from some sticky spider web and kill the spider that trapped him. After that, Bilbo found the dwarves, scared all the spiders away by throwing stones, and then he freed the dwarves with his sword. Knowing this, we can infer that Bilbo has definitely changed from hobbit to hero because the original Bilbo would not have done something so brave and dangerous to save his friends. Along with the spider killing and friend saving, Bilbo was also able to help the dwarves escape from the wood elves by stealing the keys from the guards and floating them down the river in barrels.…

In the story bilbo achieves different milestones in the book,i'm here to tell you about three of them, when he stole the ring when they made it to rivendell and when bilbo saved them from the goblins. The first great obstacle Bilbo and the dwarves overcome is the Misty Mountains. As is the case throughout their journey, the farther from home they travel, the greater the danger. The very name of "the Wild" provides a symbolic contrast with what is familiar, tame, and domestic, and the deserted terrain represents the difficulties they begin to face so far from home.…

When Bilbo falls off of Dori’s shoulders entering the mountain. It can be perceived as Bilbo being weak and timid since he relies on everyone. When he escapes the caves by himself using his ring and facing Gollum and playing their game of riddles not only shows that Bilbo is good under pressure, but he is now more self-reliant. Secondly, when Bilbo finds himself standing face to face with a spider in Mirkwood, he is faced with a fight or flight situation. Bilbo quickly reacts, killing the giant spider and as Tolkien describes his thoughts as “Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins.…
