To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee is a novel taking place in the 1930’s. During this time period, the great depression was also taking its impact on people of all classes. This has caused a difference in the fashion choices that were made before and after the great depression. Different classes of people wore very diverse clothing in comparison to one another. The fashion choices from the 1930’s to the 20th century are very different.
One reason why there is a significant difference is the diversity between the North and the South. The Southerners were considered lower class, factory workers and farmers. Whereas the Northerners were considered higher class, business workers. The clothing choices depended on what you would wear to work, a fieldworker and a bank teller would wear completely different attire. The Southerners were hit with the depression harder than the Northerners because of the dependency on agriculture in the South. This caused the South to become even more poor, which influenced what they bought. This is one of the reasons we choose different attire in the 20th century.
