World War II is an historical event that is considered as the most tragic and disastrous as over 60 million people were killed. Many nations, groups and people mobilized together in order to fight back against the Nazis, including the scientific community. In 1939, when United Kingdom declared war on Germany, Alan Turing and his team worked together to break the code of the Enigma machine and thus have access to the German military communication ( SOURCE). This essay is about the cryptanalysis of Enigma. In order to clearly explain this process, in this essay I will focus on the Enigma machine, the Bombe Machine and Alan Turing.

The Enigma machine is a “piece of spook hardware invented by a German and used by Britain's codebreakers as a way of deciphering German signals traffic during World War Two” and also used to protect military and diplomatic communication ( BBC). Due to the gravity of war, in 1938, Government Code and Cypher School recruits Alan Turing and other participant in order to break the code of Enigma with the use of cryptanalysis. Turing is recognized as the one who broke the Enigma code, yet he was not alone. There was five codebreakers: Alan Turing, Joan Clarke, the only female who married Turing, John Cairncross, revealed as a spy for the Cambridge spy ring, Peter Hilton that was a genius mathematician who spoke German and invented one of the longest palindromes in the world, Hugh Alexander, a chess champion, and Jack Good (
