During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…
There are numerous paramedic specialist roles that are immensely beneficial to the community and even more so in rural areas. Specialist Roles provide and allow a for a wider range of scope of practices where patients can receive advanced care in difficult or life threatening situations. The most common specialist role that majority of paramedics aspire to become is an intensive care paramedic. An intensive care paramedic is an advanced clinical specialist of paramedicine and like every service will work with a variety of multidisciplinary teams supporting each other and achieving common goals that benefit the community. To advance from a fully qualified paramedic to an intensive care paramedic will involve an educational requirement where…
As an intern, I didn 't have this case on my own since my agency will not let us have our own case until later in the year. It is a CPS case that I assisted an investigative social worker with. I aided the social worker with some of the interviews. Thus, I also went with the social worker to pick up the children and their belongings so that they could go with their safety resource; which was their grandparents. When we went to the home we had to have law enforcement involved due to the mother’s boyfriend being a potential threat.…
1. Damage control principles in critical care The role of Intensive care unit in the poly-trauma context encompasses patient management and organ support; in other words, on-going physiology resuscitation. The goals of critical care are recognition and treatment of complications which ensue as a result of primary injuries (1st hit) as well as prevention, identification and management of iatrogenic injury (2nd hit). Permissive hypotension, hemostatic resuscitation and damage control surgery are the tools used in trauma-bay resuscitation.…

EMTs and Paramedics are responsible for keeping people alive and helping transport them to the nearest hospital if needed. As an EMT when they arrive on scene they have to be able to analyze the situation and get to the injured person quickly. When they are with the injured person they have to check to see what’s wrong and ask if the person is actually injured unless it is obvious, for example if they are bleeding or if the wound is visible. Once they are with the injured person they have to quickly apply bandages or a splint or whatever they need to give to the injured person. After that if the person requires more attention then it is the EMT or Paramedic responsibility to get the person to the nearest hospital as fast as they can.…

PTSD and Poverty: Trauma as a staple of inner-city life Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was first brought to the forefront through its effects on Vietnam War veterans. In 1980, the disorder was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) (Friedman), the standard classification of mental illnesses used by medical professionals in the US (“DSM”). Its classification was groundbreaking because it recognized an external cause to the unusual behaviors many people experience after trauma rather than attributing that behavior to an internal weakness. While PTSD is publicized primarily on behalf of veteran communities, those who face war in their daily lives—people living in crime and poverty stricken neighborhoods—face…
Trauma can occur to anyone who has been violated, hurt, or threatened, or to those who witness these acts (Smyth, 2013). Clients may have experienced trauma through child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual assault, natural disasters, life threatening illness, being threatened by death or harm, serious accidents, and many other situations where danger is present (Smyth, 2013). Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is an intervention acknowledging how all types of trauma may be impacting clients, and recognizing and responding to trauma in a safe and empowering way (Trauma-Informed Care, 2012). Experiencing trauma can significantly impact a person, and clients who have been through trauma may develop various mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood behavioral disorders, substance abuse, or personality disorders (Smyth, 2013). Trauma often results in a cycle of trauma, with the traumatic event eliciting a bodily response, followed by an emotional response, and then a behavioral response; after this, each time a trigger…
Being an EMT is one of the best jobs I have ever had. Waking up in the morning and driving to work is an easy task knowing that most likely by the end of my shift I am going to make a difference in someone’s life. Every day at work as an EMT is a different day with new people and goals. Being an EMT is extremely exciting and rewarding. Imagine rushing into a stranger’s home to help them in their worst moments.…
This past summer, I expanded my medical knowledge by becoming a certified EMT. The course showed me a glimpse into parts of hands-on patient care that I was not exposed to in other settings. The program goals “include educating individuals to integrate the clinical data that they obtain from their medical history, physical examination, and laboratory analysis in order to form a differential diagnosis for the patient condition,” rather than simply relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. This corresponds to my own orientation and experience. In my different volunteer experiences, I have seen all different types of patients, and have seen how different approaches work for different patients.…

As an EMT, being exposed to various medical emergencies, I cherish the uniqueness of each patient encounter. Though some health emergencies are similar in terms of diagnosis and treatment, the circumstances and concerns of each patient differs and thus your care must be tailored to provide optimal treatment, which can ultimately mean the difference between a patient’s life and death. Giving my best care coupled with a positive, compassionate and comforting approach can mean so much to a patient as they go through one of the toughest times in their life. By aiding and treating different injuries and illnesses, I have come to appreciate and also be grateful for the little things I usually take for granted. This gratitude has led me to give back to people in my community by volunteering in New York City’s Medical Reserve Corps.…
