Understanding Bureaucracy – Option 1 A successful multibillion dollar company will always have a beginning with a modest start. Even mega giant corporations such as Disney had to start somewhere; in fact, it started in a one-car garage in 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy. Soon after a company realizes success and grows exponentially, it must take on a bureaucratic hierarchy. Managing success requires layers of management to ensure there is accountability and clearly defined roles and responsibilities (Jones, 2013). A robust bureaucracy will require just the right amount of layers; consequently, too many layers will build a tall hierarchy and risk over management with too many conflicts of interest. Inside the many layers of responsibilities throughout the Disney foundation, CEO Bob Iger has the most authority and maintains the ultimate responsibility for the corporation (Jones, 2013). As the appointed head of Disney, Bob Iger relies on the stature of his position to ensure his management team clearly runs his intentions through the many facets and layers of the business. Leaders are created and integrity is earned by demonstrated ability and past performance; therefore, leaders and managers are key vectors in dynamic corporations such as Disney (Ionescu & Grigore, 2016).
