Comparing The Characters In Since The Book Thief

Since The Book Thief is a historical fiction text, the fictitious characters interact in a realistic WWII setting in Germany. Three characters in the book, Liesel, Rudy, and Max develop their identities within the parameters of the Nazi controlled society. However, if Liesel, Rudy, and Max were characters in today's society, their lives would be different. Liesel’s is an adolescence, Liesel has blond hair, she wears dresses. Liesel helps other people, she likes to read a lot of books and she likes to find new words in the books she reads. She was also affected by not being able to read any books. Liesel has to go to Ilsa’s son library and Ilsa lets her read all the books she wants. When Ilsa fires Rosa, Liesel wouldn’t be able to read anymore, so she stole the books, but eventually she would return it. “The book thief and her brother were traveling down toward Munich, where they would soon be given over to foster parents. We now know, of course, that the boy didn’t make it.” (Zusak,pg.19). “When it came to stealing, Liesel and Rudy first stuck with the idea that there was safety in numbers” (Zusak, pg.272). Rudy was affected by not being allowed to look up to Jesse Owens, people even thought he was crazy when he painted himself black. Rudy even died because of WWII, his house was bombed, but he received a kiss from Liesel. “He smeared the charcoal on, nice and thick, till he was covered in black. Even his hair received a once-over.” (Zusak, pg.57). “She leaned down and looked at his lifeless face and Liesel kissed her best friend, Rudy Steiner, soft and true on his lips.” (Zusak, pg.536). Max was affected by having to leave his family behind so he can protect himself, he did not want to leave his family, but he had to. Liesel would still have her mother and brother. Rudy would be able to look up to Jesse Owens, also he would be able to join the Olympics. He could possibly be in a healthy relationship with Liesel. Rudy would not die, he could possibly live till he is old.Max would be able to be a famous Jew artist. He would not have to worry that he is jewish. Max would not have to hide in anyone’s house/basement. He would be able to enjoy his life with no worries.
