In both the brothers Grimm and my story the mother exists but is absent from most of the story. I decided to have the mother in the beginning because the main character has certain qualities that her mother has given or taught the main character. I didn’t want to orphan the main character too quickly because that would be going too big too fast and I would have run out of room for more sorrow and heartache. Another similarity between my story and all of the others is that the main character cries or mourns for the loss of her mother. In my story it says “Everyday Leanna prayed and cried for her mother to return home safe.” This does not necessarily mean that the mother is dead but it does mark a point where the mother is no longer part of the
