Reading both The Brain: The Story of You by David Eagleman and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin, I can see they are related in many ways. Both readings speak about the issues of using drugs, seclusion, and feelings.
First, the drug addiction and incarceration issues in both readings. Eagleman states that “going to prison doesn’t solve their [users’] problem – it generally worsens it.” (125) in most of the cases this situation happens. Besides, Sonny’s friend said that “he’ll [Sonny] just star working his way back in [rehab] again” “…he’ll never kick the habit” (Baldwin, 126) which is another reality. The two readings express the issue in going to prison due to drugs, in addition to the lack of improvement in drug addictive’s life once they leave the rehab places. Eagleman’s book states that “when the volunteers were left out of the game, areas involved in their pain matrix became active” (147) Baldwin’s short story refers that “He moved in an atmosphere which wasn’t like theirs at all” (137) and “…to be afflicted by this presence...” (137). Both the book and the story speak about desolation, and how our brain reacts to the fact of being cut out. The importance in human nature of being included in a group, and the feelings which are triggers as consequence of these actions. Isabel and her parents felt put aside by Sonny with his disaffected behavior, but Sonny was in a dungeon of despair.
