Comparing The American Dream: Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, And Oprah Winfrey

Most people do not believe that the American dream is still a part of our current society. The American dream, regardless, will never die. When the first people crossed the ocean they promised a better and free life. Just as James Adams stated, “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement.”(Adams) This statement is explaining how each american sets themselves goals for the future and it depends on how hard you work to reach those goals, or in other words their American Dream. She is known internationally for her great success and her ability to help those in need. While Oprah was “a rebellious teen--pron to running away and stealing--”, at the time she never thought that she would ever turn out the way she did.(Mont) When Winfrey was younger she lived in the ghetto along with everyone else in her family. “She claims to have been molested repeatedly by family members as early as the age of nine.”(Mont) Now that Winfrey has grown up she feels there is no reason to dwell on the past. “As a fourteen year old, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son who died shortly thereafter.”(Mont) Once she started to grow up, Oprah told herself over and over again that she was going to overcome her issues and become successful. After hard work and dedication for what she loved, Oprah became an international movie star. All three are well known for their success in their separate fields. Most young people do not believe that the dreams is alive because they feel that it is out of their reach. “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.”(Adams) Many people have not achieved their dream because they are still wanting more in life. The only way to satisfy yourself is to accomplish every goal that you set your mind to by having perseverance and passion for your goal.
