Comparing The American Dream In Of Mice And Men

The American Dream The theme of the American dream can be seen in several novels specifically Of Mice and Men, a realistic fiction book told by John Steinbeck. In this book the reader is introduced to two main characters names Lennie and George and their journey to the american dream. Another Example of where the american dream is seen in Mawi Asgedom’s Of Beetles and Angels in this book the reader can see Mawi’s journey of going from a refugee in Africa to receiving a full scholarship from Harvard. Both of these stories show us that the American dream is attainable, however there are always exceptions. A place where the reader can see the American dream in Of Mice and Men is when Lennie and George talk about their own dream that they are pursuing which is getting a house together. This can be seen in Of Beetles and Angels when Mawi said “ I decided that I would always keep my brother in my heart. (...) and started to work even harder. I aced my finals and maintained my straight A’s.”(Asgedom 113) This shows that the American dream is attainable because even though Mawi’s brother died, he still worked hard for him and the work payed off because it states that he aced his finals and keeps straight A’s. The hard work can be seen that is was payed off when Mawi says, “And Harvard, the best known one in the land had offered him a full tuition scholarship.”(Asgedom 119) This shows that the American dream is attainable because Mawi shows that his hard work paid off. He achieved his goal of getting a scholarship to Harvard, this is what the American dream is all about; one can achieve their goal through hard work. In conclusion, the american dream is attainable. This can be seen through Mawi’s example from Of Beetles and Angels. Although this is true, there are always exceptions and one can be seen in Of Mice and Men where George and Lennie can both be seen working hard but don't achieve their
