Terry Fox was born on July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His full name is Terrance Stanley Fox, he was named after both his uncles. He had three other siblings, the older brother Fred and a younger brother and sister, Darrell and Judith. His parents names were Betty and Rolly Fox. In 1966, the family moved west and eventually settled in Port Coquitlam, a community located about 27 km east of Vancouver. Terry was always a very athletic child even at a young age.In elementary school, he played baseball. He was very enthusiastic about it and would show up to games very early just so he wouldn’t miss it. In Grade 8 Terry’s new favourite sport was basketball. Terry had no interest in running but did it anyway, just so he could please his coach. Terry found running very exhausting but kept on going. He still wanted to play on the basketball team. He knew was one of the worst on the team, so he trained very hard during practices. The coach saw how hard Terry was training and rewarded him with one minute of floor play all season. On the other hand his friend Doug was a good basketball player with natural skill, he was also a first-string basketball player on the team. During the summer Terry called Doug over so they could practice basketball, Doug agreed and the boys trained hard all summer. In Grade 9 the coach would not cut anyone from the team, but he would only give playing time to the 12 best players. In grade 9, Terry was among the top twelve players. By grade ten, Terry and his friend Doug earned a place on the starting line for the basketball team. In grade eleven was on the starting line for the Port Coquitlam High School Ravens. During this year he still ran cross-country, and played soccer and rugby. In grade 12, Terry was the co-winner of the school’s Athlete of the Year
