Babe from the short story “Babe in Paradise” and Beth from the short story “Falling Bodies” are both two women just trying to make a living that come across many difficulties. They both are two completely different people at times and at others they seem like they can be the same person. Babe is a 16 year old woman who has to endure a lot for someone her age much like Beth who just lost her Boyfriend to a unfortunate death and stuck raising a newborn baby on her own.
One way they are similar is that they are both caregivers of some kind. Babe is a caregiver to her mother Delia. It seems kind of odd that Babe has to take care of her mother even though it should be the other way around. Babe’s mother Delia is unstable and has these episodes where she relies on Babe to calm her down and bring her back to reality. Babe has had to endure a lot more than Beth ever has. Babe has had nobody to raise her but herself. She pretty much has been on her own except for having Delia around. Which is basically harder than being on your own. Delia has these episodes where she has a temporary state of amnesia and can’t even remember Babe’s name. When she has these episodes it’s up to Babe to bring her mother back to reality. Beth doesn’t run into any problems like that, it’s actually the opposite for her. Beth is an adult and still had someone support her. Even though it was someone she hardly knew.
Although Babe and Beth had many similarities and differences they both had to overcome many challenges. They both were used by people, they both used other people, and both experienced so much loss.
