Comparing Starry Night And Vincent Van Gogh's Spiral Jetty

I decided to write about the piece Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and the piece Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson. I believe there are similarities between the two pieces as well as some differences that makes each piece stand out. Each piece uses a different element of art and a principle form of art that makes the two pieces very noteworthy to the viewers. I chose these two pieces, because I can see why and how each of the two artist created their piece and it’s very interesting how surprisingly similar they both are when it comes to art and to life in general. Vincent Van Gogh, who created Starry Night, was born on March 30th, 1853. He was one of the most known post-impressionist artist of his time and of history. During his stay, he painted Starry Night. That image is the view from Van Gogh’s window at the asylum. He used impasto to create his painting. One of the elements that he used was the use of lines. He used lines in his piece when painting the swirls in the sky and the lines are made to represent that the sky is moving (Debrah J. DeWitte 416-417). He puts emphasis on the colors of the stars, just so that the viewers can get a glimpse as to what Van Gogh saw almost every night looking out the window. One of the things that Van Gogh was known for was his use of colors. Because he was such an emotional and expressive person, he would always use colors to express how he felt. In the background of Starry Night, you can see a church and there are people out there who believe that Van Gogh included the church intentionally, because he wanted to show the viewers of his struggles with religion.
