Steinbeck presents Slim and Curley as foil characters, their characteristics, their personality, their actions and how they speak are completely opposite, therefore they play an important role throughout the novel. Slim can be seen to have a higher status compared to Curley though Curley is the boss’s son. Slim is highly respected among all the ranch workers. “All talk stopped when he spoke.” (P.56) This line suggests that Slim is highly respected, everyone stops what they are doing when he speaks and gives eye contact towards him, they all show admiration towards him. They are willing to listen to what Slim says showing that what Slim says is meaningful and insightful. On the other hand, Curley is hated and isolated among all the ranch workers
